I drove the M151 Jeep extensively in the Army in the 80s and the Growler looks way cooler.

In six years I never saw a growler and hadn’t even heard of them until the Jalopnik article. There can’t be too many of those out there to auction off.

The seven ton, however, is a seriously capable truck. I would love to have a reason to own one of those. Cat C12 engine, Allison auto transmission, central tire inflation, 6X6 with the option of locking all differentials in addition to the center diff, independent suspension , air ride seat... I got to drive one a few times. They’re an impressive machine. Seems like they would be a killer logging truck, or something like that.

They’re very wide, too, I think. We followed a convoy of them once and seems like they had a top speed of about 50 mph.

Yes! I would like to know too.  I checked the website but didn’t see anything.  What did the Hummers go for? This vehicle has to be cheaper, right?

They are wide, but not overly so. They’re basically the same width as any other medium or heavy duty commercial truck, i.e., they’re roughly the same size as a dump truck. In the recon unit we used them fairly lightly loaded (probably never more than a few tons in cargo), and they would run 65mph+ interstate speeds easily on long distance movements. They’re actually better highway speed hill climbing vehicles than a modern uparmored HMMWV. They were never our limiting factor when it came to speed.

If you can’t tell, I really respect those trucks. Unlike the HMMWV that is steaming pile of crap in most regards, these were very good at what they do. And because most of the mechanical systems and driveline like the Cat engine and Allison 7 speed are off the shelf commercial parts used in a million other trucks out there, they actually work. We never once dragged a broken 7-ton out of the field, but we did drag dead HMMWVs home nearly every time (even after we got brand new, zero mile, up-armored trucks).

I like the look of those m 151s. I still want to get a m998 humvee before they stop selling them.

I’m pretty sure the humvees are. I think it’s just tricky getting them registered.
